New vehicle sales hitting higher gear

Paul Martin / June 21, 2018

If you have a friend who sells cars, you’ve probably noticed their outlook on the world is improving.

auto-1291491_1920The beginning of this year was not especially kind to those in the new vehicle business. Consumers were sitting on their hands a bit. Whether it was a result of winter weather conditions, good deals on used units or falling confidence levels is not clear. One thing was certain, though, and that is the number of new vehicles leaving dealer lots was weak compared to the same period last year.

Things started to improve in April. Almost 4,600 new units were delivered by dealers across the province. That compares quite favourably to the 4,900 in April a year ago.

April also marks the beginning of the high season for new motor vehicle sales. The period from April to September or October is usually strongest and we’ll be tracking movement from dealer lots to see if it provides some insight into the mood of consumers. This, and whether they have an appetite for big-ticket expenditures.
