When you hear complaints about disparity in income levels, they tend to have an overtone suggesting some sort of oppression or grand scheme to keep one group down while elevating another.
But a new study of income levels conducted by StatsCan points to something far less nefarious….it seems that’s we’re just the way we are. If you settle into a category, you tend to stay there whether at the top or the bottom.
Canadian tax filers, the report shows, tend to stay on the same rung of the financial ladder. This becomes ever more evident as we get older. Younger people are more likely to move along the spectrum as they establish careers and move up the corporate ladder.
Seniors are more likely to remain in the same strata compared to young people and those who were born here tend to show less mobility up and down the income curve than people who immigrated to Canada from abroad. Those folks tend to be more upwardly mobile, reflecting the system that encourages immigration by people with strong skill sets
