Saskatoon mayor Charlie Clark should be looking over his shoulder at his Regina counterpart Michael Fougere. You see, Fougere is sneaky.
Clark has been wrestling with trying to win support for a plan to expand use of bicycles for commuting in Saskatoon because his strategy to impose bike lanes downtown is meeting resistance. Fougere, on the other hand, has never even spoken about bikes, bike lanes or pedalling your way to work.
But what he has done is close virtually every major thoroughfare in the Queen City for construction, which means about the only ones actually getting to work on time are those on bikes. Motorists are constantly being detoured, delayed or just plain frustrated.
If you’re from out of town and planning to visit Regina, you might want to think about throwing a bike in the back of the truck and parking at a mall or retail outlet on the outskirts and pedalling through town. And it’s going to be even more fun when farm machinery has to time its arrival for the new two-versus-one lane on Lewvan Drive when they head to Farm Progress.
